10 Ways to Become More Active This Spring

April 4, 2014 By Christina ChitwoodFitness

FBFL - 10 Ways to Become More Active This SpringSpring is here and in full bloom! Are you ready to tackle your health and fitness goals this spring? Spring is the perfect time to work out more and become healthier in time for summer.

Summer vacations and perhaps braving the beach in your swimwear aren’t the only motivations to get healthy. Spring also brings more daylight, warmer weather, and new enticements to become more active.

Here are 10 ways to become more active this spring to start you on your way.

1. Take a hike on a new trail. Hiking is a great way to get exercise and enjoy nature. Spring is a great time to hike because it’s warmer but not too hot yet. Make sure to bring your water bottle.

2. Walk or run around a new area or your favorite relaxing spot. I love to walk near our house, at the nearest park, or at the beach. Walking is great wherever you are. I prefer running on the beach because it’s lighter on the joints but more difficult overall. Walking and running are great because you can do them anywhere, and the only equipment you need are shoes (and for women, a good sports bra!).

3. Swim in the nearest pool, your gym’s pool, or the ocean if there is one near you. Swimming is an amazing form of exercise. It’s great for all ages, it’s light on your joints, it’s a good cardiovascular workout, and the friction of movement created against the water strengthens your body.

4. Dance. Any type of dance … just dance! You can dance at home, at the club, at a dance studio, or at a fitness dance class or private dance lesson. Dancing is freeing and a wonderful way to express yourself through body movement.

5. Find a running track near you. This may be a trail or an actual track-and-field type track. Running on a specific track can be fun and motivating. You can challenge yourself to complete a certain amount of laps, finish in a specific amount of time, or run a length of one of the Olympic races.

6. Bike ride to work or ride with family or friends. It’s easy to forget that bike riding isn’t just for kids. Bike riding can bring out your inner child in a good way. Plus, it’s great exercise. If you ride to work, you will be helping to save the planet as well.

7. Play a sport. The options are endless. Play a sport with family or friends. Play with co-workers. You can even join a local sports team or join a club. Some great sports for the spring are golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, and ice skating (great year-round).

8. Set specific times to work out with a friend. Working out with a friend or family member can make it more enjoyable and help with accountability. When you’ve made an appointment with someone, you’re much more likely to actually do your workout. You can set a weekly appointment, multiple times per week, or even every day if you want to go all out.

9. Try a new fitness class. There are so many choices available for fitness classes. There really is something for everyone. The great thing about classes is that you get the social aspect as well as motivation from working out with others. The thing to be aware of with classes is to listen to your body. The instructor may not know your body’s history, injuries, or previous injuries. Even if your instructor does, a class is often more general to be suitable for more people. So, listen to your body, and take it easier if you need to even if others are going full out.

10. Hire a fitness expert or personal trainer. The best and most specific way to exercise is hiring a fitness expert or personal trainer. Working one-to-one ensures your exercise program is tailored exactly to your body and your goals.

There are endless types of exercise available. The key is finding one you feel drawn to or motivated to do at this exact moment. What inspires you right now is a good indication of what type of exercise you should focus on right now. You can still do other types of exercise, but focus on your exercise inspiration.

Working out is meant to help you feel good and become healthier. Have as much fun with your exercise as possible. Enjoy the spring weather and alternative workouts that come with it!

I like #3 and #5! Funny (quick ) story: when I started swimming a couple of years ago I thought it would be SO easy. It only took one lap to realize that WOW swimming is HARD! LOL! But, I kept at it and now I’m officially an Ironman!

    Palani Beach

If you think it’s only Boracay that has the famous white beach, well Masbate has its own version too, in Palani Beach! The beach is an hour and-a-half drive from the capital Masbate City, over a well-paved 68-km concrete road that traverses through rolling hills and grasslands where cattle roam.

Palani Beach is located in Balud, a 5th-class municipality where the main sources of livelihood for locals are coconut farming and fishing, as well as working in large cattle ranches. What’s so nice about Palani Beach is that it feels a lot like Boracay’s White Beach but minus the congestion and commercialization, although a couple of resorts have already sprung up.
