30-Day Nutrition Challenge: Refrigerator Makeover

January 5, 2014 By Christina Chitwood30-Day Challenges, health, Nutrition

30-Day Nutrition Challenge Refrigerator MakeoverDo you find you eat whatever you have in your refrigerator even if it’s not healthy? Do you go off of your nutrition plan when temptation strikes? With the refrigerator makeover, not only are you going to have only healthy food that fits with your nutrition plan in your fridge, but you will also have a clean fridge in the process.

Removing Temptations from Your Space

Eliminating as much temptation as possible from your home is an important part of any nutrition challenge. This is an exciting process, although it can be tough to let go of tasty, unhealthy goodies.

We are going to walk you through step by step of how to create a temptation-free environment.

The Refrigerator Makeover

Step 1: Take everything out of your refrigerator or your fridge/freezer.

Step 2: Thoroughly clean the shelves and drawers of your refrigerator.

Step 3: Go through every item that was in your refrigerator and get rid of every single item that is not beneficial to your health. See what to keep below.

Step 4: Repeat steps 1 through 3 for your freezer.

Step 5: Place the healthiest items in your refrigerator and freezer at eye level and near the middle. These are the items you typically notice most when opening the refrigerator.

Step 6: List the unhealthy items you feel you will miss more than others and write down healthy alternatives.

Step 7: Take the unopened, unexpired food and drinks you are not keeping to donate to your nearest homeless shelter.

What to Keep

Vegetables

Fruit

Products high in fiber

Products high in protein

Good sources of complex carbohydrates

If you eat meat, good-quality lean meat

Water and herbal teas are best. Juices are OK as long as they aren’t from concentrate.

What to Watch for

Processed foods

A long list of ingredients

Ingredients you haven’t heard of

The ingredients aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, malt, or maltodextrin.

Added sugar. Sugar is added to many unexpected products such as salad dressing, bread, and drinks.
