You’re going strong! You made it through the weekend and day four of our 30-Day Nutrition Challenge. It’s never too late to join in on this challenge if you haven’t already. The more the merrier. Now another week is here and we want to share 5 tips on day five to help you kick butt and master your cravings!
1. Know Your Cravings
You most likely know what it is you crave. But do you know why you crave it? Just understanding why this particular craving is driving you nuts can weaken its power over you significantly. Do you crave it because other people are having it? Is it a habit on a certain day or time? Is it something you don’t normally want and you only want it because you committed to not having it? Have a think about where the drive behind your craving comes from. Knowing this can instantly diminish your craving’s power.
2. Substitute Your Cravings
Investigating to see if you can substitute a healthier alternative is a great way to maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Try these substitutions for a place to start.
Cacao nibs instead of milk chocolate.
Greek yoghurt with fruit instead of ice cream.
Carrot sticks with hummus instead of French fries. (Watch for a post coming soon on how to make your own hummus.)
3. Get an Acountabil-a-buddy
Having someone to hold you accountable to your commitment can really help boost your will power. Find someone who you trust, is supportive and will help you stay strong. Even better, find someone who fits the above description and is taking part in the challenge as well. It’s not too late to start the challenge, so get someone involved!
4. Water
Often hunger cravings can be calmed with a glass of cold water. With your body being 80% water, making sure you get enough water is a must. Try to make a habit of always having a a bottle of water at hand … at work, in the car, on the bus, at the mall, wherever you go! Anytime you are craving some contraband, sip your water and carry on.
5. Keep Busy
You have been on your challenge long enough now to realize that when you you are busy with work, tasks and chores, you probably aren’t thinking about cravings. When you relax and slow down, you might start craving something on your list of no-no’s. When you have a task to do, you focus on that. When you don’t, you naturally look to make yourself happy. Food is more often than not the first place we resort to to raise our moods. There are 2 solutions here.
Solution 1: Use your challenge as an awesome way to push yourself to achieve more.
Solution 2: When you are looking to relax, create a healthy meal … something you can take pride in.
