5 Ways Couples Can Keep Love Fresh through Fitness

Christina and Tom on their 1st anniversary at Pennyhill Park in Surrey, England, 2010.

As our 2nd wedding anniversary approached, Tom and I discussed what our favorite way to celebrate our anniversary would be. At the moment, one of our favorite activities to do together as a couple is golfing.

Tom and I go to the driving range, play different golf courses, play at Scratch (where Tom recently became a golf pro), and work on our putting and chipping at Cottonwood (where Tom is a golf pro) or Torrey Pines. So we thought that playing a new golf course would be a fun way to celebrate our 2nd anniversary.

We went to the Doubletree Golf Resort in San Diego. It was wonderful to spend around 5 hours on our anniversary weekend playing golf together in the beautiful, sunny San Diego weather.

Activities like golf really help bring Tom and me close together, and fitness activities are a great way to spend some quality time. Here are 5 ways to keep your love fresh through fitness:

1. Play golf. Whether both, either, or neither of you are golfers, golf is a great sport and game to learn and improve at together. You can enjoy the beautiful outdoors and get some walking in. If you want to get a little extra exercise, you can buy or rent a push cart to walk around the golf course, which I like to do.

2. Try yoga or Pilates. Tom and I enjoy doing Pilates together to keep our core strong and lengthen our muscles. Recently Tom and I have been enjoying practicing Bikram (Hot) Yoga together.

3. Go to the gym or on a walk together. Exercising and working up a sweat will help you bond, and it’s nice to work toward your health goals together. You can also enhance your communication by having a chance to talk more.

4. If you live by a beach or go on holiday to a beach, try surfing together. This is another new activity Tom and I have enjoyed since we moved to San Diego (except for Tom’s stingray bite, which is another story)! Surfing is very relaxing as well as great exercise – and it’s lovely to spend time at the beach!

5. Get a couple’s massage. This is more of a health-and-wellbeing activity that enhances your fitness by increasing flexibility and improving workouts and sports. A couple’s massage was another activity Tom and I enjoyed on our anniversary weekend!

These are all activities Tom and I find help us grow closer together. There are many other activities you can try as well. We wish you a wonderful journey growing closer together as a couple through fitness! 🙂
