Bunny Hops Exercise for Kids Demonstrated by a 2 Year Old – YouTube Video

My 2 year old niece, Zoey, loves to jump and hop! She’s always jumping around the house! So, I couldn’t wait to show her the Bunny Hops Dice. Zoey loves it and did tons of hopping from the first day. Zoey demonstrates the bunny hops exercise in this adorable video!

At the end of this sweet video, Zoey is trying the more advanced version, the Rotation Jumps Exercise for Kids and Adults! You can see how to perform this exercise in more detail below.

Bunny Hops Exercise for Kids

The Bunny Hops Exercise for Kids is focused on working the lower body. It works leg strength, abdominal strength, power, quickness, upper body control, stability, and coordination.

When performing the bunny hops exercise with kids, it’s important to keep these in mind!

  1. Help your child learn to hop. If your child is new to hopping or jumping, face your child and hold his or her hands in yours. Then hop together. This is a great way for your child to feel the movement as you do it together. It also helps your child feel comfortable jumping and leaving the ground.
  2. Stand tall. Try to have your child stand as tall as possible and pull his or her belly button in before starting the exercise. This will promote good posture and increase abdominal engagement.
  3. Place hands in front and together before starting hops. Place hands in front of the body a little above the belly button before starting the exercise. This will help get the upper body positioned before starting the hops, therefore making it easier to perform correctly.
  4. Try to land as softly as possible. This is tough for toddlers and preschoolers to focus on. So, this is typically a good goal for kids that are a little older. If they seem ready for a new challenge, see if they can try to land as softly as a cat.
  5. Recommend landing on the balls of feet and rolling through the feet to help with shock absorption. When first landing on the ground, land on the balls of the feet, roll through the foot from the ball of the foot to the middle and then heel. It is important to try not to land with a flat foot as this is rough on the body and joints. This is also easier for older children to pick up. Don’t worry if it takes a while for them to get it.
  6. Encourage them to keep trying. As long as they are trying and moving, encourage them! This will help them gain confidence. Then you can begin to refine the movement as confidence increases.

Progressions of the Bunny Hops Exercise for Kids

When it’s apparent that your child is ready to progress to a more difficult version of the bunny hops exercise, here are some progressions to try while performing the exercise:

  1. Jumping in one place (The basic exercise).
  2. Jumping moving forward.
  3. Increasing repetitions. For older kids, multiplication and division can be done with the dice to increase jumping repetitions.
  4. Increasing quickness of jumps and between jumps.
  5. Adding arm movements while jumping.
  6.  Adding rotations to the jumping. Try the Rotation Jumps Exercise shown in the tutorial below.

Well, kids love to jump anyway. This exercise/fun activity would be popular with most children,I think. Nice video.

What a fun idea! We are always needing ways to expend energy in the winter and spring. It’s either too cold or too muddy to let the kids go outside. I can’t wait to try this next time they are getting a little restless! 🙂 I pinned it so it won’t get lost. 🙂

    Thanks!
