My 3-year-old niece, Zoey, demonstrates the Cat in the Hat hop on one leg exercise with me in this video! Zoey was so excited to wear the Cat in the Hat themed hats while we did this exercise! If you’re looking for a Cat in the Hat hat, I definitely recommend this Cat in the Hat kids hat (Zoey is wearing this hat) and Cat in the Hat adult hat (I’m wearing this hat).

HOW TO DO THE CAT IN THE HAT HOP ON ONE LEG EXERCISE

This exercise can be done with one or more kids of all ages and adults. The exercise can be done individually, taking turns with someone else, or together at the same time.

    1. Read the book, Cat in the Hat.
    2. Watch the video (above).
    3. Teach the exercise by going through the steps below.
    4. Decide on a length or time or repetitions to do the exercise on each leg.
    5. Decide on a number of sets or length of time the exercise will be repeated (With shorts breaks after each leg has been done. Approximately a 30 second to 1 minute break is often good.).
    6. Have fun hopping like Cat in the Hat!

CAT IN THE HAT HOP ON ONE LEG EXERCISE

The Cat in the Hat hop on one leg exercise for kids is focused on full-body movement, coordination, posture, core strength, strength, control, balance, and physical fitness.

When performing the Cat in the Hat hop on one leg exercise with kids, it’s important to keep these in mind:

      1. Introduce hopping on one leg without arms. Have the child lift one foot in the air and start hopping. You can always have the child put his or her foot down in between hops to help with balance while learning this exercise. Arms can be wherever the child naturally puts them. You don’t need to specify for this option.
      2. Add hands placed on hips (more advanced). You can help the child place hands and arms to help him or her feel the hand and arms placement as well as understand the exercise better.
      3. Add arm and body movement together (more advanced). Have the child do steps 1 and 2 together. It provides more of a challenge to keep the hands in one place on the hips.
      4. Add arms – one hand in front of body and one hand above shoulder, like hands are holding plates and such (more advanced). You can help the child place hands and arms to help him or her feel the hand and arm placement as well as understand the exercise better.
      5. Add arm and body movement together (more advanced). Have the child do hops with arms in step 4. These arm positions provide more of a challenge in addition to the challenge to keep them as still as possible while hopping.
      6. Focus on fun and controlled range of motion. This exercise is meant to be fun and to have as energetic hopping as possible while maintaining control.
      7. Remind kids about using good posture and engaging abdominals. Encourage kids to make themselves as tall as possible by bringing their head closer to the ceiling and pulling their belly button in toward the back wall (drawing their belly button into their spine), and keep good posture throughout the exercise. It can be tough to maintain good posture as they get tired, but good posture increases the effectiveness immensely. It will also help prevent injury.
      8. Encourage kids to keep trying. As long as they are trying and moving, encourage them! This will help them gain confidence. Then you can begin to refine the movement as confidence increases.

PROGRESSIONS OF THE CAT IN THE HAT HOP ON ONE LEG EXERCISE FOR KIDS

          1. Change arm positions.
          2. Increase hopping height
          3. Increase quickness.
          4. Increase repetitions.
          5. Combine 1-4 together.
