Duck Walks Exercise for Kids
The Duck Walks Exercise for Kids is focused on lower body strength and control, stability of the upper body, abdominal strength to control upper body, and coordination.
When performing the duck walks exercise with kids, it’s important to keep these in mind:
- Practice placing one foot in front of the other purposefully before squatting down while doing the exercise. Slowly and controlled, place one foot in front of the other purposefully, almost like slow, deliberate walking. This can help young children get the idea of what is going to happen with the exercise and that it will be moving forward.
- Introduce squats standing still. This will help with the understanding of the bending and squatting that will be performed while moving forward.
- Start to have kids bend their knees more while placing one foot in front of the other. Once the first two exercises have been introduced, the full movement can be introduced by having the child go lower to the ground while duck walking forward.
- Focus on controlled movement. This exercise is not meant to be performed very quickly. The timing can be quickened once it is really mastered, but the main idea is to get as low as possible while performing the exercise correctly.
- Remind kids about using good posture. You may start to see posture get sloppier as kids continue to duck walk. Encourage them to reset their posture and keep good posture for each duck walk.
- Encourage kids to keep trying. As long as they are trying and moving, encourage them! This will help them gain confidence. Then you can begin to refine the movement as confidence increases.
Progressions of the Duck Walks Exercise for Kids
When it’s apparent that your child is ready to progress to a more difficult version of the duck walk exercise, here are some progressions to try while performing the exercise:
- Increase range of motion (R.O.M.). The goal is to get as low as possible until the back knee is almost touching the floor.
- Increase repetitions. For older kids, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be done with the dice to increase repetitions, focus on educational skills, and make the game more interesting.
- Add arm movement. Moving the arms opposite arm to leg, like you would when running, adds increased difficulty where coordination is concerned.

How very neat! Love your idea of fitness dice! The butterfly dice are my favorite because I know my little guy will be excited to try it as a part of a game. Ms. Zoey is looking super into the duck walk, too.
