Fish Swimming Exercise for Kids
The Fish Swimming Exercise for Kids is based around movement of the upper body. It includes rotation, balance, arm and hand coordination, and some isolation of the lower body to the upper body.
When performing the Fish Swimming Exercise for Kids, it’s important to keep these in mind!
- Movement is the most important thing. Even if it isn’t totally accurate movement with young children, it’s OK as long as they are moving. Just work on getting the posture and technique to improve over time.
- Stand tall. Try to have your child stand as tall as possible and pull his or her belly button in before starting the exercise. This will promote good posture and increase abdominal engagement.
- Place hands together before starting the movement. Palms should be placed together before movement begins to help with the understanding of the exercise and performing the exercise.
- Help your child begin the movement. It can be helpful, especially for younger kids and toddlers, if you place their palms together first. Then, holding their hands together, help your child rotate from side to side slowly to increase quickness of learning the exercise and understanding the movement.
- Encourage them to keep trying. As long as they are trying and moving, encourage them! This will help them gain confidence. Then you can begin to refine the movement as confidence increases.
Progressions of the Fish Swimming Exercise for Kids
When it’s apparent that your child is ready to progress to a more difficult version of the fish swimming exercise, here are some progressions to try while performing the exercise:
- Increase the ROM (Range of Motion).
- Stand on one leg.
- Add a vertical component such as doing squats.
- Add movement forward such as walking forward.
- Try the Swimming Pilates Exercise shown in the tutorial below.
