Week 18: Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free, Dairy-Free Vegas Trip!
It’s been wonderful having my in-laws visit from England! (I will refer to my in-laws as Mum and Dad, as I call them, for the rest of the post.)
This week is exciting as we are introducing Mum and Dad to Las Vegas for their first visit! It will be interesting to see if I can find more protein and enough food to suit my diet. Read on below to see how my week went.

Today I started my day off with 30 minutes of full-body exercises (that is, single leg deadlifts, W’s Y’s & T’s, front planks with leg lifts vertically and horizontally, side planks/J.Lo’s, etc.) + a lovely 30-minute walk with Chea + 10 minutes of full-body stretching on the Power Plate.
Tom worked in the morning and afternoon, and then Mum, Dad, and I met Tom at Oaks North Golf Course. We started our road trip to Las Vegas from there.
We arrived in Vegas in the evening and introduced Mum and Dad to their first Vegas buffet at the Mirage. I was surprised at how much I could find to eat there that suited my diet. The chef even personally walked me around the entire buffet and showed me what would fit into my diet. It was awesome!
Day 120 complete. Getting a personal tour of the Mirage buffet by the chef was fun!
Monday, March 25th:
In Las Vegas, a typical trip includes a lot of walking, especially if you’re showing anyone the sights for the first time. It’s Mum and Dad’s first time to Vegas. So, we did a lot of walking, which is what I counted as my workout for today.
We also spent a lovely morning at the pool, and then I had an indulgent birthday massage at the Mirage Spa! We saw Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles Love in the evening, which was just fabulous! I love seeing creative performances and getting fun ideas from them.
Today, for food I started the day off with fruit and yogurt. I had two eggs for lunch. At the spa at the Mirage, they had some trail mix, which I enjoyed. Then we ate at the Mirage buffet for dinner. Something I didn’t expect at the buffet was a sugar-free blueberry sorbet. It was lovely to have a sugar-free dessert when everyone else was enjoying other indulgent desserts.
I typically eat three meals and a couple of snacks throughout the day. However, Vegas is often a lot different as the buffets fill me up for most of the day.
Day 121 complete. I love Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles Love!
Tuesday, March 26th:
Tom and I used the gym at the Mirage today. We did one of Tom’s 1-hour workout creations (planks, split squats, deadlifts, push ups, cable exercise, etc.) + 10 minutes of full-body stretching.
Working out at the gym at the Mirage reminded me of Tom’s and my first time working out there the summer of 2008. We had our first and only “5-hour energy,” and we worked out in the Mirage gym for over 3 hours! lol. One of the trainers there even commented on how long we were there! Although, it was great to get in a long workout, it’s definitely something that I wouldn’t recommend. It was fun that once!
Again we walked around Vegas a lot, and in the evening we saw Penn and Teller. It was a great show.
Today, for food Tom and I had a fruit smoothie with whey protein in the morning, ate at the Bellagio buffet for lunch, and had a very light meal at a Chinese restaurant in the evening. I was very excited to have the omelette bar open and get a delicious omelette filled with lots of vegetables and no cheese. It’s been wonderful to have many options that fit with my diet when eating at the buffets. I’m happy to have this be the final buffet, though. There are only so many buffets a body can handle. lol.
Day 122 complete. I enjoyed working out at the gym at the Mirage with Tom!
Wednesday, March 27th:
Today we left Vegas at 6:00am to drive back to San Diego and make it back in time for afternoon work. As today was also the final day of my recovery week for workouts, it was a complete rest day.
My students performed in the spring Kroc Exhibition in the evening. They did very well, and I’m proud of them!
Day 123 complete. It was a busy, long, and successful day!
Thursday, March 28th:
I did TurboFire Fire 30 Class with Chea + 10 minutes of full-body stretching!
A lot of the day was either spent working or catching up on things. Mum and Dad went back to England today. It was so wonderful having them visit!
Day 124 complete. I was sad to see Mum and Dad go back to England.
Friday, March 29th:
Today would normally have been my rest day since I have Saturday and Sunday off this week. I want to work out on those days. Since I’ve recently finished my recovery week, I want to work out even today. So, I went for a lovely long walk with Tom.
I had a good and busy work day and a lovely evening with Tom!
Day 125 complete. I love going for walks!
Saturday, March 30th:
I started the day off with a Zumba workout. I did ZIN DVD 42 (as a Zumba instructor and member of ZIN, Zumba Instructror Network, I get a new DVD every other month. They are approximately 40-45minutes.) + 10 minutes of full-body stretching on the Power Plate.
I also got an hour-long deep-tissue massage to help my muscles recover and protect my body. This is a good habit I developed during my ice-dance training at the World level. It also is a preventative measure for keeping previous injuries, such as my tendinitis, from returning. I continue to get deep-tissue massages, since I still work out at an intense level and I want my body to last at its optimum level.
Day 126 complete. I enjoyed having a deep-tissue massage today.
It was great fun visiting Vegas with Mum, Dad, and Tom! As always, the shows (and massage) were my favorite part. I felt so much better this visit as I was able to get more protein than last visit, and I was pleasantly surprised to find how many food options were able to fit into my gluten-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free diet.
Yay! I’ve completed my 18th week out of 26 weeks!
Be sure to check out my original 6-Month Nutrition and Fitness Experiment post for a list of all my posts and recipes!
My own variation of a sugar-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free vegetarian diet:
Sugar-free consists of no sugar, sugar substitutes, honey, or other equivalent except for a small amount of preferably natural sweetener that is already in a product such as bread or whey protein.
Dairy-free includes a few exceptions. I’m including whey protein. I also have times of experimenting with Greek yogurt and regular yogurt to see if they are beneficial to me. In addition, I include eggs in my diet, which is a variation from a vegan diet.
Gluten-free also includes a few exceptions. I include Ezekiel Bread or sprouted bread, which is close to gluten-free in how it’s digested but not actually gluten-free. Some gluten-free plans say oats are fine and some do not. I include oats in my plan.
My fitness plan:
My exercise consists of workouts 6 days per week. The only exception can be if I do an additional workout on a day to count for one of the days or on a recovery week every few months.
Seems like you along with Mum and Dad had a great time and those days were great. Good to see you are still on the right track and I wish you all the best in keeping it that way. Keep up the good work and have fun! Cheers.
Thanks, Dan! It was a great time, and I was happy to stay true to the experiment! 🙂
