Healthy Family Activities for Holidays

May 27, 2014 By TomHoliday Health and Fitness, Wellbeing

Healthy Family Activities For HolidaysAs I’m writing this, it’s the day before Memorial Day. I’m trying to plan a fun surprise day out for Christina and me (shhhh, don’t tell her!!). I’m going to hedge my bets and come up with several ideas. Then I’ll pick the best one, or maybe do them all! If you are struggling for ideas, see if one of these would work for your family.

Pack a big family picnic

Why not have each family member think of a picnic snack and prepare it for the family. If everyone makes a part of it, you will have a feast to take on the road with you … or maybe just eat it in the yard. Challenge your family to come up with a healthy contribution to the feast. It could be a fun salad, humus and carrot sticks or a homemade soup.

Plan a long walk

It could simply be a walk around a nice park, a walk along the beach or coastline, a hike up a hill or mountain, or a walk around a lake. No matter where you live, you can usually find a pretty place for a long stroll. Walking is great exercise and can be a perfect opportunity for your family to talk and connect. It doesn’t matter if there are 2 of you or 20 of you.

Try a new sport together

Why not make this holiday memorable and try out a new sport together. Groupon is filled with lots of deals for sports you may never have tried or even heard of before. You can try them cheaply and have a lot of fun learning a sport together. You could try archery, rock climbing, golf, trampolining…… Christina and I tried circus sports a few years ago. What a great experience!

Start a family landscaping project

OK, now depending on your family, this one might sound a bit ambitious. Hear me out. Maybe there is a small yard project you would love to get done. Wouldn’t it be great to all pitch in and do it as a family? There’s probably a job in it for everyone. Perhaps the project needs a “Lemonade Production and Distribution Manager” or a “Leaf Raking and Relocation Expert”. This could be a great way for your family to spend a holiday.

Have fun together

When it comes to holiday time with my family, I don’t really mind what we do. Just that we do it together. Whether your family is big or small, find an activity where you can spend quality time with one another.
