Horse Gallops Exercise for Kids

The horse gallops exercise for kids is focused on coordination, posture, lower body strength, and rhythm!

When performing the horse gallops exercise with kids, it’s important to keep these in mind:

  1. Practice placing one foot in front of the other without leaving the ground. Slowly and controlled, place one foot in front of the other then draw the back leg to the front leg to mimic the galloping movement without leaving the ground. This can help young children get the idea of what is going to happen with the exercise and that it will be moving in a forward direction.
  2. Add the gallop. Once the initial technique has been taught and understood, the gallop while leaving the ground can be added.
  3. Start to have kids bend their knees more while placing one foot in front of the other. Once the first two exercises have been introduced, the full movement can be introduced by having the child go lower to the ground while galloping forward.
  4. Focus on energetic movement. This exercise is meant to be fun and energetic. Encourage kids to have fun and really go for it.
  5. Remind kids about using good posture. Encourage kids to stand tall, draw their bully button into their spine, and to keep good posture throughout the exercise.
  6. Encourage kids to keep trying. As long as they are trying and moving, encourage them! This will help them gain confidence. Then you can begin to refine the movement as confidence increases.

Progressions of the Horse Gallops Exercise for Kids

When it’s apparent that your child is ready to progress to a more difficult version of the horse gallops exercise, here are some progressions to try while performing the exercise:

  1. Increase galloping height.
  2. Increase quickness and timing.
  3. Increase repetitions. For older kids, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be done with the dice to increase repetitions, focus on educational skills, and make the game more interesting.
  4. Add arm movement.
