Valentine’s Day Sensory Bottle

This sensory bottle has been a huge hit in our house!

This is Caleb’s first Valentine’s Day, and I wanted to put together some special Valentine’s Day themed activities for him. The first thing I did was to place only “I Love You” books on one side of his front-facing bookshelf in the Montessori area of our living room. I was inspired to use these hearts for a sensory bottle after seeing these hearts used at my mom (Deb Chitwood of Living Montessori Now) and dad’s house for these activities: heart cards and counters, heart movable alphabet, and heart do-a-dot page.

I made this sensory bottle for Caleb the other day and he has been so in love with it! It was so sweet to watch him light up when he first “worked” (played) with it, and he carried it around with him while he walked, cruised, and crawled all over. After examining the sensory bottle on his play mat, he brought his sensory bottle with him to look at the books on his front-facing bookshelf, to work with the items on his shelves, to show one of our cats, to check out our dining area, to see his high chair, to look at our drum, to examine his book basket, to see the sofa, to play the piano, to stand by his floor mirror, to go by his walker, to see his table, to visit his bird push toy, and more!

Ingredients:

Water

Red Hearts or Pink Hearts

For a Sensory Bottle in General You Will Need:

A Voss Water Bottle

A Hot Glue Gun – To glue the lid onto the water bottle. Put hot glue on the lid and close tightly. (Note: You may not need this for a baby as they typically don’t have enough grip strength yet to twist open a tightly closed Voss water bottle. If you don’t use a hot glue gun and even if you do, as with any activity for babies and toddlers, monitor them while they use it.)

How to Make This Sensory Bottle

To make this Valentine’s Day sensory bottle I put 50 hearts in a Voss water bottle. You could also fill it with hearts halfway full as the 50 hearts filled to about halfway. Next, fill with water until the bottle it is almost full. You want just a tiny bit of empty space at the top for it to flow nicely when the bottle is tipped in different directions. If hearts are getting left at the top when you tip it the other way, it may be a little too full. Try removing a little water and see if that helps.

Next put hot glue on a dry lid and close the lid as tight as possible.

That’s it! It’s so simple and fast to make!

It’s mesmerizing to tilt the bottle and watch the hearts move around. It works well as a calm-down bottle for a variety of ages!
