I’m Gonna Live Forever … I’m Gonna Learn How to Fly

August 30, 2010 By Christina ChitwoodPerformance for Everyday Life

Just think … if you were going to live forever, what would you do? We’ve often heard, “What would you do if you had only one day left to live?” Interestingly, both questions mean you may allow yourself the freedom to do the things you’ve always wanted to do.

If you think you’re going to live forever, you’ll want to become very comfortable and confident in yourself. You’ll want to meet your needs and your body’s needs. You’ll want to be happy with who you are. You may have a lifetime to live, but why be unhappy or unfulfilled while you live your life? If forever is in the picture, you may become more accepting of your decisions and actions.

Did you see the 1980 movie Fame? You may have watched it when it first came out in 1980, 5 years ago, or last week. When you watch the clip below, notice how free, uninhibited, and even un-choreographed the dancing is. Everyone is moving their own way, letting themselves go, and just having a great time!

Now, if you watch the 2009 movie Fame, notice how the dancing and movements are much more choreographed and less spontaneous.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways of living. As a dancer and choreographer, I love both the 1980 and 2009 versions of Fame. But I think we need to take some tips from the 1980 version. If we add some spontaneity into our daily life, we can liven up our day. Back in the 70s and 80s, life was slower-paced. Most of all, life was freer and more spontaneous.

That’s not to say we can’t have that now, but we need to make more of a conscious effort in our fast-paced and technology-based era. Daily life today is quite choreographed. We have our choreographed daily schedule and to-do list, choreographed meetings, and even choreographed dates or appointments with friends and family.

Try adding more spontaneity into your daily life. If you feel like dancing – dance! If you feel like singing – sing. If you feel like skipping down the street –  why not skip down the street?

Yes, we worry about what others think of us. A lot of times, we even worry about what people we don’t even know think of us. Why should we give our own self-confidence and personal power away to others because we want to be liked?

Just be confident in who you are and treat people the way you would want to be treated (in other words, be friendly and nice)! When you want a pick-me-up, try singing and dancing … “I’m gonna live forever, I’m gonna learn how to fly – high!”

Now I can’t get that song out of my head – but that’s a good thing! I LOVE that song, the Fame videos, and your thoughts about our choreographed lives! I must say, the 70s and 80s were a great time! Xxx
