I was reading through Dave Pelz’s excellent Short Game Bible and stumbled across a great saying: “Practice makes Permanent, not Perfect”. This statement is so true for golf and is one that is routinely overlooked by many.
The body learns how to perform technical and complex physical actions through repetition. If you keep repeating the correct action, even if it feels weird at first, your body will first learn how to do it correctly and eventually your body will learn how to do it without any conscious thought about the technique. The same applies to poor technique. The more you practice poor technique the more permanently engrained into you that poor technique will become.
Good news! There are a couple of simple things you can do to help keep your practice sessions on track to permanent good technique.
1. Use alignment sticks or a club on the ground to make sure your feet, hips, shoulders and ball position are all spot on every time.
2. Use mirrors to check your posture and static swing positions.
It is of course difficult to keep an eye on everything on your own, and by far the best way to achieve quality practice for permanent good technique is to have a lesson with a teaching professional. A teaching professional can help to keep your practice on track and stop those bad habits from developing any further.
