Recycling Crushes Exercise for Kids Demonstrated by a 2 Year Old – YouTube Video
My 2-year-old niece, Zoey, demonstrates the recycling crushes exercise in this adorable video! She had a lot of fun saying “crush” each time she did a recycling crush repetition of the exercise. 🙂

Recycling Crushes Exercise for Kids
The Recycling Crushes exercise for kids is focused on coordination, lower body strength, abdominal strength, range of movement, and posture!
When performing the recycling crushes exercise with kids, it’s important to keep these in mind:
- Start by helping kids reach to the sky, making their body as long as possible. Focus on lengthening the body and starting with good posture. Help kids get into this long, tall position to start with if necessary.
- Add squatting and bending down. Once the first position has been taught and understood, have kids perform a squat like they are sitting in a chair.
- Add arms. Once the first two parts of the exercise have been introduced, the full movement can be introduced by having kids press hands to the ground like they are crushing with their hands or wrap their arms around their legs when they squat down like they are being crushed like a can being recycled.
- Focus on fun and controlled range of motion. This exercise is meant to be fun and to have as large a range of motion as possible while maintaining control.
- Remind kids about using good posture. Encourage kids to stand tall, draw their belly button into their spine, and keep good posture throughout the exercise.
- Encourage kids to keep trying. As long as they are trying and moving, encourage them! This will help them gain confidence. Then you can begin to refine the movement as confidence increases.
Progressions of the Recycling Crushes Exercise for Kids
When it’s apparent that your child is ready to progress to a more difficult version of the recycling crushes exercise, here are some progressions to try while performing the exercise:
- Add arm movements to the standing version of the exercise.
- Increase range of motion by lengthening body more and going lower into a tighter squatting crushed position.
- Try the more advanced recycling crushes exercise performed lying down. Feet can be planted on the floor and legs are brought into the chest maintaining a 90 degree angle until arms wrap around legs to create a crushed position. To increase the difficulty, legs can be lengthened out in front to a straight position (typically not lower than 45 degrees). The lower back and upper back should stay connected to the floor if this is done correctly. If the lower back cannot stay on the floor, try to bring legs up away from the floor until the lower back can stay connected with the floor for the entire exercise. This will increase abdominal engagement and protect the back from injury.
- Add arms reaching above head when legs are out and wrapping arms around legs when legs are bent into chest.
- Increase repetitions. For older kids, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be done with the dice to increase repetitions, focus on educational skills, and make the game more interesting.
