Juicing fruits and vegetables is an awesome way to boost your intake of vitamins and minerals. By juicing, you can consume a much higher quantity of fruit and vegetables than you could if you were eating them whole. This is fantastic news for your intake of minerals and vitamins but maybe not so friendly on your wallet. Follow these tips to make juicing more affordable.
Buy Local
If you purchase your fruit and vegetables for juicing from a reputable local grower at a nearby farmers market, you can get some great deals. There are fewer costs involved in this kind of production … fewer transportation costs, storage and refrigeration costs. You will probably find the produce is fresher because it hasn’t been refrigerated and transported.
Buy in Season
In season will usually also mean cheaper. Out of season produce has to shipped in from somewhere where it is in season. Either that or it may be produced in artificial conditions which could increase the cost. It is also a great way to try new fruits and vegetables.
Shop Around
Just like you would do for a higher purchase item like a TV or computer, shop around to find the best prices. Grocery stores have different deals and contracts with different farmers. I have seen prices vary greatly on common items such as carrots, kale and celery between two stores on the same street near me. The prices will fluctuate with season and demand, so keep checking around.
Buy in Bulk
Once you learn what sort of quantities of each item you require and how long they keep, you can figure out which items you can buy in bulk and which to buy as you need. I often buy carrots in 5lb bags. They keep well and are significantly cheaper than 1lb or 2lb bags. Kale, on the other hand, is usually sold by the bunch and there is no saving for buying multiple.
