Are you ready to burn extra calories while having fun and cleaning your house? Wait a minute, did you hear that question right? Yes, you did! The great thing is … it is possible. If you read my post last week, you may already be doing it!
Here are my top 5 housecleaning workout songs:
1. The Way You Make Me Feel – Michael Jackson
The king of pop, Michael Jackson, had to make the list as his music definitely inspires movement and perhaps some spontaneous dancing. 😉 I particularly love housecleaning or doing anything to this song, as it reminds me of one of my favorite movies, Center Stage. Being a dancer myself, I’m a big fan of dance movies and all things dance! However, even if you aren’t into dance movies, Michael Jackson’s songs can really get you into a groove while you’re cleaning your house.
2. Fame – Irene Cara (1980 Movie Fame, as well as hit television series)
This upbeat song is bound to get you moving and hopefully start you dancing when you’re doing your housework! This is such a fun song that it really makes 5 minutes, 16 seconds fly by. Guess what – if you dance to this song on your break, you’ll have completed your 5 minutes of movement/exercise. Usually it’ll be quite high intensity exercise, too, as it’s a quick and upbeat song. Most likely, you’ll feel energized and ready to begin cleaning again.
3. My Generation – The Who
This song has a way of making you want to move your body and work extra quickly! A favorite album of Tom’s and mine is The Ultimate Collection by the Who. We have some very fond memories of the Who’s music.
There was our engagement weekend, where we listened to the album nearly the entire drive to the Lake District and back as well as any time we were in the car. My mom and also I saw the Who live at the Sheffield Arena.
Tom and I decided we had such great memories together listening to the Who that we had the string quartet at our wedding blessing play versions of our favorite songs from the Who for intros and exits. Some of our favorite songs are “See Me, Feel Me,” “The Seeker,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” and “Baba O’Riley.” I find songs by the Who suitable for most activities and moods.
4. Good Vibrations – Beach Boys
It’s difficult not to smile and be happy when listening to the Beach Boys! First your head starts bopping to the beat, your hands and fingers tapping along. Before you know it, you’re either dancing in your seat or you’ve already begun dancing around the house or wherever you are. 🙂 Most of the Beach Boys’ songs are very upbeat and cheerful, so they’re fantastic housecleaning songs. Songs with fast tempos help you work quickly and have some fun! I particularly like their album The Beach Boys Sounds of Summer.
5. Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi has some more great songs to get you moving! One of my favorite concerts was Bon Jovi’s when I saw him at Denver’s Pepsi Center with my brother, Will. Another Bon Jovi classic is “It’s My Life.” Check out any of Bon Jovi’s albums.
Bonus – Michael W. Smith
Here’s someone who isn’t on the top 5, because it’s difficult to choose one specific song. I absolutely love any of Michael W. Smith’s music (especially his album Worship). I particularly enjoy listening to Christian music. I find it has a calming effect and can really put things into perspective. In addition, Michael W. Smith is another artist whose music Tom and I played at our wedding blessing!
You may have noticed an ongoing theme in this post of mentioning Tom … and Tom’s and my wedding. It’s Tom’s and my first wedding anniversary today, so I’ve been remembering lots of amazing and wonderful times on and around our wedding day. I find Michael W. Smith and Christian music great to listen to any time of day, whether I’m getting ready in the morning, on the way home from work, planning a presentation, relaxing, working out and, of course, housecleaning. What better than to get housework done while being uplifted!
Housework is so much more enjoyable when there is some music you love playing in the background. It encourages you to work harder and faster … and before you know it, you’ve finished!
I love dancing while working or on my 5-minute breaks. You may be different, so find what active cleaning techniques work for you. Maybe you’ll end up jumping to an entire song, playing air guitar, or, you name it … be creative!
What are some of your favorite housecleaning songs or 5-minute break activities? Wishing you enjoyable music and happy cleaning!
You’ve picked some great songs here.
I feel like Bon Jovi has provided the soundtrack of my life. For every age or time period I can associate a Bon Jovi song. LOL.
I saw MWS in concert a couple of years ago. He was awesome.

Hiya Chrissy!
I must say that number 1 on your housework songs works a treat because it gets your feet moving! Pussycat Dolls ‘Don’t Cha’ is a good housework song 🙂
I must say also, you’ve got me thinking what tracks really help me clean the house he-he! You’ve inspired me to create a list.
Clare x.
Thanks for your great comment, Clare! I’m so happy to have inspired you and helped make your cleaning something you can enjoy to get you moving! Have fun dancing, moving, and cleaning to your songs. 🙂
Such a good idea for a blog post!
Couldn’t agree more with the Michael Jackson, in fact pretty much anything he has done would be perfect, there’s really something from everyone.
May I suggest ‘I want to break free’ by Queen if only for the fact that the music video for this song is very housework based! That and Queen rock!
Thanks for posting and keep up the good work,
Gracie.
Thanks so much for your comment, Gracie! Excellent addition of Queen. Their music definitely makes you want to move! I hope you have a great week. 🙂
Hey Christina,
Thanks for this post.
A new blogger, I put a link to it in my blog at http://cleannhandy.blogspot.com.
Housecleaning can be a real burden for working couples on the weekend, but your strategy makes it fun. We even put in a zumba DVD sometimes while cleaning.
Thanks again,
Lourdes
