Top 5 Reasons Why Golf Is a Great Sport for Kids

February 27, 2013 By TomFitness for Kids, Golf

Top 5 Reasons Why Golf Is a Great Sport for KidsEncouraging kids to take part in a sport is more important in today’s society than ever before. There are so many advantages to be gotten from learning and working at a sport. I believe golf is one of the best sports for kids to get into. Here are 5 reasons why!

1. Golf is hard! And so is life. The lessons learned in working at your golf game translate directly to everyday life. Golf is a game that takes a lot of dedication, hard work, persistence and the ability to keep going when everything falls apart. The same rings true for life’s troubles. They usually come at the worst times and take hard work to get through.

2. Golf has a low risk of injury. As a non-contact sport, the risk of injury is dramatically reduced. That means it can be played and enjoyed for a lifetime. It is one of the very few professional sports that has a competitive senior (+50) division. Many professional players have been more successful after turning 40. I had a lady approach me the other day on the driving range who was warming up for a round. She was 92!

3. Golf is a self-regulated sport. There are no referees, no umpires, no judges! So you may assume that it is a free-for-all where cheats run rampant. Well there is one all-powerful judge, jury and executioner. Yourself! The game’s great players would rather finish dead last than to have their integrity questioned by their peers. There is something tremendously character building about penalising yourself when you know you are the only one who saw you break a rule. Look at this article on Blayne Barber for a great story of integrity: Barber disqualifies himself from PGA Tour Q-School.

4. Golf is going places. Golf’s major competitive tours span the USA, Europe, Asia and pretty much anywhere there is grass. Golf will make its return to the Olympics in Rio 2016. It is one of the fastest growing sports in Asia. Golf’s popularity with women is ever increasing. High school golf is more competitive than ever. Why not have your kids be a part of this game?

5. Golf is fun! It’s not for everyone, but those who like golf tend to love it! It can be a bonding experience between father and son. A challenge to beat your older sister. A goal to be the top player on your high school team or just an escape from everyday life and time to be alone with your thoughts.

Low risk of injury? IMHO golfers are prone to back injury due to the sheer amount of pressure while swinging.

    • Tom says

      January 28, 2014 at 10:25 pm

It’s true that back injury and other joint injuries do occur when playing golf. These are usually the result of poor posture before playing golf.
Poor posture = Poor movement patterns
      Poor movement patterns = Injuries

My recommendation for anyone concerned about injury when playing golf would be to seek advice from a fitness professional about their current posture and fitness level, the following the exercises prescribed to remedy any problems. Then seeing a good golf coach who can help them set up to the ball correctly.

Doing this will not only help prevent injury, but also improve a persons golf game.

Best article ever. I’ve been thinking of sports for my child that have low risk of injury. It seems that golf is perfect! We always watch it together on television and he’s really attached whenever golfers make it to their last shot. I’ll keep this article in mind, no, I will bookmark it! 🙂

Hi, I am father to a two year old boy. I am starting to think about sports for my kid. Maybe I am thinking ahead but time goes by so quickly that I want to have a few options for him. Thanks for the 5 reasons for golf.

    • Tom says

      January 28, 2014 at 10:32 pm

I think it’s never too young to promote interest in golf to children. At 2 years old I would keep things extremely simple. Rolling a golf ball by hand into a cup can be a great fun for a toddler. But they will also learn a lot.
Balancing a ball on a tee can challenge fine motor skills but also pretty fun!

Hey Tom….your blog is deserves lot of respect because no one discussed about golf like you. I have a kid and he loves golf but I am not much sure about this sport. The way you described is wonderful and the points that arises here are awesome. I like the most self regulated sport rather then other points and the injury one is also noticeable. Thanks for sharing and clearing my all doubts.

I agree with you for my own 3 reasons.

    1. Golf is not for everyone
    2. It helps kids to master be patience
    3. Its a art more than a game

Golf is a premium class game and clam and quietness of the game will teach the kids of tolerance and serenity. Golf is a sport but in my opinion golf is an art. Kids can master the art with golf.
