Top 5 Sunscreen Tips to Preserve Your Youthful Appearance

June 27, 2012 By Christina ChitwoodBeauty, Performance for Everyday Life, Skincare

Use at least SPF 30Many jobs within performance rely on a youthful appearance. It’s sad to stress the importance of appearance, but it’s a simple truth that appearance is important in many jobs today – and especially in the performance industry. Here’s one thing you can do to prolong your youthful appearance and help protect your health: WEAR SUNSCREEN!

Here are my top 5 sunscreen tips:

1. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Your sunscreen should protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Wear at least 30 SPF. The amount of SPF only counts if you have a layer (like frosting) where you can see the white as you rub it in. Once you rub it in, you won’t see it anymore. Do two layers and reapply every couple of hours and more often if you’re sweating or swimming.

3. Key areas to protect: face, neck, chest, shoulders, and hands. Anything exposed is important. Key areas show signs of aging early.

4. If you want a tan, fake tan is the safest way to go. However, fake tan still uses chemicals. Remember that although fake tan will make your skin appear darker, fake tan doesn’t give you any protection from the sun.

5. It’s a good idea to have at least one layer of sunscreen on every day – to protect you in the car and anytime you’re in the sun throughout the day. Even just a little sun every day can cause wrinkles.

I know the importance of protecting skin by always wearing sunscreen, since I wore sunscreen throughout my childhood and continue to do so. It’s paid off so far. Because I have vitiligo (where I have areas of my body without pigment), my skin burns especially easily. I can’t stress enough the importance of being vigilant about protecting your skin.

Not protecting your skin can cause sagging skin, wrinkles, and skin cancer. It’s easy to forget this when you’re young, but most skin damage is typically done in your teens and twenties.

Protect yourself. Do yourself and your career a favor by wearing sunscreen! You’ll be much happier later on. 🙂

I’m a redhead so I know this one well. Now that I’m older the difference in skin quality between areas that took a lot of sun, like the hands, and areas that were protected is striking. And I used sunscreen a lot. Wear a hat and long sleeves when you can.

Maybe for now, we can say that sunblocks are not that important to apply whenever we want to expose our self to heat. But as time goes by, flaws are already noticeable that made us to freak out!. It was my lesson from childhood days. My skin is not good as the others. Thanks for the tips to help me restore my skin.
I really appreciate the importance of skin care. Especially from childhood until up to present stage you are in. It would really matters.

Thanks for these great tips, Christine. My skin get tanned very fast, even I am out in the sun only for 15 minutes. These are of great use to me.

I used to religiously slather sun screen on my face everyday-until one day i had horrible breakouts. Required many antibiotics. While i would not attribute it to the sunscreen, my dermatologist has asked me not to use any comodogenic products on my face. I am now looking for oil free sunscreens that are as effective. any inputs will be welcome!

Totally agree with the advice. Great tips and especially agree with Number 4! I have found that fake tanning is definitely the way to go for me.

This is really good! I use lotions to protect my skin but it seems that it keeps my skin older than my age! This sun screen tips would make me look younger than usual. Thank you for this!

I have tried putting on sunblock cream once when we were out on a hot summer day to the beach. It did not suit me well. When I was out for a quick minute in the sun I could feel my skin heating instantly and starting to sore then afterwards I kept sneezing and having running nose. I think I was allergic. I vowed never to try it again. But I wouldn’t mind trying some organic sun blocking alternative. I think I have a quite thick skin, I don’t get sun burned easily that’s why I enjoy going out into the sun but not so frequently I know I could end up being fried.

I live in Australia where the sun is extremely harsh. Everyday SPF 50 on my skin.

In countries where the sun is extremely harsh like Greece, especially in summer a sunscreen with SPF over 50 is essential, depending on the skin type. Very nice tips btw, good article!

    Hi Christina

I know this may sound ridiculous I live in the UK and I tend not to use too much spf. I like to sit in the sun for about 15 – 30 minutes with no cream on, this enables my body to soak up the essential vitamin D. I also use Jeunesse Rejuvenation Serum derived from stem cell technology. It helps to heal wounds, topical irritations, repairs sun damage, and regenerate skin cells.

    Many thanks
