HOT Way to Keep in Shape!

June 15, 2011 By Christina ChitwoodFitness, Golf Fitness, Yoga

I had been curious to try Bikram or hot yoga for a while. The benefits of yoga for the golfer are many: increased flexibility, coordination, balance and focus to name a few. Having tried it in the past and being a little bored after a class or two I dismissed it as not for me. But hot yoga seemed a little more exciting.

For those who are unsure what it is, hot yoga is yoga performed in a heated and humid environment – over 100° Fahrenheit. The heat allows for greater flexibility and an increased load on the cardiovascular system.

Two things finally got me to try hot yoga:

1. A great Groupon deal for Sol Yoga

2. A stingray sting through my Achilles tendon which I thought might benefit from the hot yoga

Chrissy’s and my first class went better than expected and felt great on the body. Chrissy described the feeling afterwards as the same as after having a massage. I felt calm and relaxed yet strangely energized.

If you try it, you will sweat. A lot. I never knew my eyelids could sweat before I tried hot yoga! They do. A lot. There is something very cleansing about that though. The body rids itself of toxins (and hopefully lingering stingray venom) through sweat.

I just completed my third class yesterday morning and am still enjoying it greatly. Looking forwards to tomorrow’s class.

Having done a beginner and advanced class and having found the beginner class slightly harder, I am certain that the more advanced a yogi (what a great word) becomes in his/her practice, the harder they can make each asana or pose. So I look forwards to becoming a more proficient yogi.

More to come on this soon!!!

If you want to try a hot yoga class, go for it!!! The whole yoga environment is very non-judgmental and easy to get into.

If you have any joint issues, cardiovascular problems or hyper mobility, speak to your instructor beforehand.

Having tried just about every other type of yoga there is I’m curious about hot yoga. Ive heard good things about it. Maybe I’ll wait for a groupon voucher too then I’ll have no excuse not to try!

I remember the way teaching felt from teaching chemistry at university. I remember the way energies shifted in response to my own and what I did to modulate the atmosphere and engagement in the lecture hall. Yoga is different though, it is a much more visceral energy, much closer and unfiltered through the intellect.

Yoga can even help improve your relationship with your spouse, parents, friends or loved ones! A mind that is relaxed, happy and contented is better able to deal with sensitive relationship matters. Yoga and meditation work on keeping the mind happy and peaceful; benefit from the strengthened special bond you share with people close to you.

I’ve never been convinced by Hot Yoga – Bikram or otherwise – it doesn’t seem to offer what I’m looking for from yoga and I heard it could also be dangerous since you think you can stretch further than is actually sensible given that your muscles are more relaxed.

What do you think about this?
A lot of my friends are very keen though so maybe I should give it a try!

    Thanks for sharing

Trust you instincts on this one. Yoga was never traditionally done in that kind of intentional heat. Actually it was the opposite: it was done in the morning and after sunset in Southern India to avoid that heat.

But yoga is very different these days in the west. One of the intentions behind http://bookretreats.com, a yoga retreat and teacher training booking site, is to help people find the most authentic practitioners and teachers.

I love yoga. Have been practicing and teaching for a handful of years. I prefer the slow form, hot and bikram are fun once in a while but I don’t feel like my being needs that type of training. I like my practice to be well balanced between ying and yang. It seems more useful, effective and sustainable. http://www.brunotreves.com

There’s a lot of great ways to keep in shape and I hope that I can always bike, run, swim, and spend time with my friends in the gym. And of course, I need to do regular hatha yoga sessions. Bikram and hot yoga will be my priority come Christmas time.

Yoga with some training, is my favorite thing to to. It is like how salty and sweet combine, with soothing and intense can also be combined. However it can be hard to find a perfect program that does this, so far Shaun T’s Focus T25 Program is the best one I have found that does this. Anyways thank you for all of your tips! I think that my next just plain yoga session will have to be a hot yoga one. Thanks again.
