Great First Montessori-Friendly Baby Toy: Skwish {Natural Baby Product Review}

August 25, 2018 By Christina ChitwoodBaby, Baby Products, Mom Life, Montessori, Natural Baby Products

I’m so glad we had this Montessori-friendly toy from the beginning! It is awesome for babies when they first start using toys and during their first year. I’m sharing what I love, don’t love, and my full review of the Skwish baby toy.

Montessori-Friendly Baby Toy: Skwish

From the beginning, our baby boy, Caleb, was drawn to the Skwish baby toy. His Skwish was the first toy that Caleb grabbed and held by himself.

When we bought the Skwish for Caleb, we thought it was really neat and thought he would like it, but we didn’t know quite how much he would like it. It turned out to be the very first toy he grabbed when he started grabbing and holding things. He grabbed the Skwish and held it all by himself when he first grabbed it. Caleb continues to love his Skwish months later and has used it for teething, as a rattle, moving after it when it rolls away, and more.

The Skwish is also Montessori-friendly. It is primarily made of wood. It has tactile, visual, and auditory stimulation.

Favorite Ways to Use a Skwish

Here are some of our favorite ways to use the Skwish:

  • As a first toy or early baby toy.
  • For grabbing and grasping.
  • As a teether.
  • For learning.
  • As a rattle.
  • At home.
  • Going out.
  • On a trip.
  • Basically, anywhere Caleb would like to use it (as long as it’s safe to do so).

What I Love About the Swish Baby Toy

In addition to what I wrote about as our favorite ways to use the Skwish (see above), here are some of the many things that I love about the Skwish. This is based on the Skwish we have, but most things will probably be applicable to other Skwish toys.

  • It can be used as a first toy or early baby toy. It’s great for this because the many wooden sticks and elastic ties are easier to grab and hold.
  • It can be used to develop grabbing and grasping skills.
  • It can be used as a teether.
  • It can be used as a rattle.
  • It can be used to help learn how an object like the Skwish moves and the beads move on it.
  • It’s wooden.
  • It is made with a non-toxic water-based finish.
  • It’s light. This is nice for carrying when holding your baby or to take for travel.
  • It squishes down. This is great for travel. In one of Caleb’s Montessori-inspired travel with a baby spaces you can see his Skwish.
  • Our baby loves his Skwish.
  • It develops focus and concentration.
  • The toy has many different functions.
  • It encourages and helps develop reaching skills. Our baby will reach to get the Skwish.
  • It encourages learning and using rolling skills. Our baby will roll to get the Skwish.
  • It really helps to encourage additional movement. Our baby will move to get the Skwish.
  • Our baby will spend a good length of time playing (“working”) with his Skwish.
  • You can hang it from a baby gym like this wooden baby gym.
  • You can attach it to a stroller.
  • It’s good quality.
  • It looks classy.
  • It looks great even in main living spaces. We’ve enjoy having it most of the time in our living room where we have Caleb’s Montessori baby space. See the Skwish in his newborn Montessori baby space.
  • There are different colors and wooden Skwish options available.

What I Don’t Love About the Skwish Baby Toy

There isn’t much that I don’t love about this Skwish, but here’s what I don’t love. Again, this is based on the Skwish we have but may be applicable to other Skwish toys.

  • The Skwish can be a little trickier to clean than some wooden toys because of the elastic ties.

Things to be Aware of

  • As with any baby product, be with your baby and monitor your baby while he or she uses the Skwish.
  • Leave plenty of extra space around your baby when he or she is playing with the Skwish or be right there to play with your baby. You don’t want to risk tripping near your baby.

Overall Skwish Opinion

We love our Skwish and definitely would get it again! We actually considered getting a second Skwish with a different wooden finish. Because the rest of the toy would be the same, we decided against it.

Caleb really enjoys playing with his Skwish and spends a lot of time using it. How he’s used it has developed and grown as he’s gotten a little older, but he continues to use it a lot. I would say Caleb definitely loves his Skwish!
