8 Ways to Give Thanks for Family

November 22, 2010 By Christina ChitwoodGratitude, Performance for Everyday Life

This Thursday is Thanksgiving in the U.S.A! I feel the best thing about Thanksgiving is being with family. The next best thing is remembering happy family memories.

Spending Time with Family for Thanksgiving

Update: November 2019

My husband, Tom, and I have been lucky to be able to celebrate Thanksgivings with both sides of our families over the years and on both sides of the ocean!

We’ve had very special Thanksgiving celebrations with my family in the U.S.! These have always been wonderful and they’ve gotten to be even more special since our son, Caleb, was born!

In previous years, we’ve had fantastic Thanksgiving celebrations with Tom’s family in England! It was lovely to be able to get everyone together on that side of the family for a Thanksgiving celebration – especially when at one time we were living in Great Britain where Thanksgiving is not a traditional holiday.

8 Ways to Give Thanks

Here are 8 ways to give thanks for family this holiday season:

1. Get family and friends together for Thanksgiving. Even if it cannot be on actual Thanksgiving, set a date to get everyone together. You can get everyone together even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving!

2. Make time to meet up with family and friends throughout the holiday season. Often it is easy for time to pass without seeing family and friends as often as you’d like. So, the holiday season is a great time to set those extra dates to meet up with the meaningful people in your life.

3. Start a journal about things you’re thankful for about your family. I especially like to write down or think about what I’m thankful for. For this Thanksgiving celebration with the family, my mother in-law had the idea to set out a journal for the family to write in throughout the day. We could write down any things we were thankful for. It was a lovely idea.

4. Call your family up unexpectedly or more often than normal. It’s wonderful to get an extra call from family or friends, even if only to say hi.

5. Send an e-card or nice e-mail to a family member or the entire family. An e-card or e-mail can make someone’s day, so make your family’s day!

6. Write a nice letter to your family. It’s not very often that you receive a nice letter in the mail. Usually it’s those bills or junk mail, so why not surprise your family when they open their mail with a really lovely letter!

7. Write a blog post about positive things about your family. If you have a blog, write a blog post or paragraph within your blog post about your family.

8. Send or give a thoughtful gesture or gift. It could be anything, but it’s always fun to receive something thoughtful!

These are some ideas to get started. There are unlimited ways to give thanks for family, so be creative. Giving thanks helps improve enjoyment of life and will typically help you feel better about yourself in the meantime. It also helps remind you of all the good things happening in your life.

I’m so thankful for my husband, Tom, and our son, Caleb! I’m also most definitely thankful for the fact that Tom and I have a wonderful family in both the U.S.A. and in Great Britain!

I’d love to hear what you’re thankful for this holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving!

[…] 7. We remember the value of hugging and saying “I love you.” With our closest relatives we say “I love you” A LOT. And a lot of hugging goes on when we get together with our extended family. My daughter, Christina, gives her ideas on sharing love with family in a Thanksgiving post she wrote last year called “8 Ways to Give Thanks for Family.” […]
