30-Day Nutrition Challenge: 5 Surprising Sugar-laden Products

January 25, 2014 By Christina Chitwood30-Day Challenges, health, Nutrition

30-Day Nutrition Challenge: 5 Surprising Sugar-laden ProductsYou’ve made it through 23 days of our 30-Day Nutrition Challenge! Now to day 24 and the hidden places you may not expect to find sugar.

Sugar is in many common everyday items that we use. It’s easy to think you’re having a lot less sugar than you’re consuming in reality.

Start noticing any sugar you intake in your daily diet. You can record the amount or take action by reading labels or making your own as described below.

5 Hidden Places Sugar Lurks

1. Salad Dressings. The meal you thought was so healthy can be extremely calorific and sugar based depending on the ingredients in the dressing. Read the ingredients in your dressings. If sugar is one of the ingredients, ideally it should be far down on the list.

2. Sauces. A fabulous way to enhance the flavor of a dish is to use a sauce or different sauces. However, you may be surprised at how many sauces not only have some sugar but a lot of it. Especially tomato-based sauces tend to have extra sugar to enhance the flavor. This is unnecessary for your health and enjoyment.

3. Bread. Look at your bread right now. Does it have added sugar? If so, how much? I prefer Ezekiel Bread as it feels better on the body, and the body responds by producing more energy.

4. Flavored Yogurts. Yes, I hear you saying, “But yogurt is healthy.” This is true, but typically only with the plain flavors and no added sugars.

5. Cereals. Some cereals are great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. However, there are many cereals that are basically dessert. When selecting your cereal, read the ingredients and look for cereal with no added sugar. The best thing is to make your own cereal by combining oats, nuts, and dried fruit for a healthy dish that can be made sugar free and gluten free as well as meet your healthy requirements.

Read the Labels

I can’t emphasize this enough. If you just think it’s OK and doesn’t have sugar in it, you may be surprised. Know what you are putting into your body. It will make a difference in your health, especially over time.

Make Your Own

The best thing you can do is to make homemade versions of all of the above. Then you know and have control over exactly what goes into  your recipes.

What surprising products have had sugar them? What’s one of your favorite recipes to make one of these staples at home?
