CreamHaus Play Mat for Play and Naps {Natural Baby Product Review}

July 22, 2018 By Christina ChitwoodBaby, Baby Products, Mom Life, Natural Baby Products

Caleb loves his play mat, and we love to use it while playing with him on the floor! We’re a big fan of its being natural. I’m sharing what I love, don’t love, and my full review of the CreamHaus play mat.

CreamHaus Play Mat for Play and Naps {Natural Baby Product Review}

Our baby boy, Caleb, at 3 months old.

Play Mat

We bought this play mat for Caleb before he was born. We planned to use it for Caleb to play (do his “work”) on, take naps near us in our living room, and once he needs it, have a larger comfortable, safe space in our gym while we work out with Caleb next to us. We’ve used it for so many purposes already.

Favorite Ways to Use a Play Mat

Here are some of our favorite ways to use our play mat!

  • As a safe place for our baby to play (do his “work”) in our living room.
  • As a place for our baby to take naps in our living room. Note: I checked with CreamHaus, and they said their nap mats and play mats are the same. They said the play mats are safe for sleeping on. However, as with any baby item, do your own research and/or check with your pediatrician before using it.
  • As a way for Tom and me to get down on the floor to play with Caleb comfortably, even for extended periods of time.
  • As a safe place to keep our baby in the room with us while working at home (while our baby is concentrating or napping).
  • As a safe place to keep our baby in the room with us while we make food (while our baby is concentrating or napping). Our kitchen and living room are in one open space. Caleb’s baby area is in what we have as the living room but is pretty much between the living room and kitchen.
  • To have our baby next to us while working out. We haven’t used it this way yet, but plan to as he needs more space, especially when he’s crawling. So far we’ve been using his topponcino and lambskin rug while we work out in our home gym.
  • To keep our baby near us when he first goes to sleep for the night until we all go to our bedroom for the night and we put Caleb on his floor bed (We used a bassinet in our room for Caleb until he outgrew it at 4 months old. Then we moved him to his floor bed in our room). Note: I checked with CreamHaus, and they said their nap mats and play mats are the same. They said the play mats are safe for sleeping on. However, as with any baby item, do your own research and/or check with your pediatrician before using it.
  • As a portable place to play.

What I Love About This Play Mat

In addition to what I wrote about as our favorite ways to use this play mat (see above), here are some of the many things that I love about this play mat. This is based on the Creamhaus play mat we have, but some things may be applicable to other play mats.

  • It’s comfortable for your baby to play on. It has a nice padding while still being fairly thin and firm.
  • It can help give some protection from bumps or falls when a baby is learning to do tummy time, sit up, crawl, or start to walk.
  • It’s a more natural play mat while still having a good amount of padding.
  • It’s hypoallergenic.
  • It’s “free of formamide, PVC, EVA, fire retardants and other VOC’s”. CreamHaus Website
  • It has “extra thick non-toxic PE foam for shock absorption.” CreamHaus Website
  • It doesn’t have polyurethane foam.
  • It’s “skin irritation tested on human.” – CreamHaus Website
  • The cover is waterproof. This is great for cleaning up drool, spit up, or even a diaper blow out.
  • It’s easy to clean. Soap and water works great. You can also use a baby wipe for quick clean up.
  • It’s light. This is nice for moving it around the house.
  • It folds up and is portable. This is great for carrying around the house, storing if needed, and traveling in the car.
  • It’s safer than a blanket on the ground in the sense that a blanket could get pulled over your baby even when placed underneath a baby.
  • It goes great with Montessori because it can be used as a play mat or floor bed (for naps) if you’re following Montessori principles with your baby.
  • It gives your baby a safe place near you while you work at home, do chores, or anything you need to do while he or she is concentrating or napping (while supervised, of course).
  • It can give you some time to do work or something you need to get done with your baby near you while he or she is concentrating or napping (while supervised, of course).
  • You can take it with you – even on a road trip.
  • Ours is a good-quality play mat.
  • It looks great even in main living spaces. We’ve enjoy having it most of the time in our living room where we have Caleb’s Montessori baby space. See the play mat in his newborn Montessori baby space.
  • Our play mat has three colors on one side and is all cream colored on the other size if you flip it over.
  • There are different play mat sizes and colors available.
  • It can be used for babies, toddlers, and older kids.

What I Don’t Love About This Play Mat

There isn’t much that I don’t love about this play mat, but here’s what I don’t love. Again, this is based on the play mat we have but may be applicable to other play mats.

  • The outside of the play mat can have a cooler temperature and can have more stick to it than a fabric play mat cover. This can make it potentially less comfortable for napping and the coolness can be more likely to wake a sleeping baby when placed on it than a mattress used in place of a play mat.
  • I wish it could have the same padding thickness, protection, and comfort with organic cotton instead of the food-grade polyethylene (PE) foam. This foam is a more natural foam, and I’m much happier with this food-grade polyethylene foam than polyurethane foam.
  • I wasn’t sure about the polyurethane (PU) leather cover, but polyurethane leather is different from polyurethane foam. I still may prefer the naturalness of a 100% percent organic cotton cover for this play mat, although I do like the benefits talked about above of ease of cleaning and grip for learning to crawl.

THINGS TO BE AWARE OF

  • As with any baby product, be with your baby and monitor your baby while he or she uses the play mat.
  • Use extra caution and monitoring when your baby is doing tummy time, sitting, crawling, or walking on the play mat until he or she is very strong with it.
  • Closely monitor your baby and have him or her in the same room as you if your baby is napping. On the back to sleep is best. Even if your baby is to the point of rolling over while sleeping, I feel it’s best to roll your baby back onto his or her back. Use your pediatrician’s recommendations for your baby for napping and sleeping.
  • Leave plenty of extra space around the play mat. You want the area to be safe around the play mat. You don’t want to risk tripping near your baby.

Overall Play Mat Opinion

We love our play mat and definitely would get it again! We actually are considering getting a larger one that we can store part of the time and use on the larger surface of our living room floor in addition to Caleb’s other play mat for when he is moving around more.

Caleb is very happy and seems comfortable on his play mat. I would say Caleb definitely loves his play mat!
