What Is Your Workout Style?

You may be wondering, “What do you mean by workout style?” Here are a few different ways you can determine your workout style.

1. Your workout wear. Whether you like to wear loose-fitting workout clothes or tight-fitting workout clothes, I recommend wearing what makes you feel good about yourself. Working out should be for yourself and your body. If you look forward to wearing that adorable workout top you have, it’ll be much easier to get motivated to do your workout!

2. Your workout gear. Do you always work out with your iPod? Do you have a favorite pair of sneakers you always wear? When those wear out, do you buy the exact same style? Do you love wearing headbands to keep your hair out of your face? Do you have a special water bottle and/or towel you save for workouts? You get the idea! You probably have things you always bring but may not even realize. If you set out your workout clothes and gear the night before, it’s much easier to just grab them and go work out when the time comes!

3. Your workout playlist. Maybe you always run to rock music, lift weights to pop music, do abs to electronic music, and stretch to classical music. Or perhaps you work out to one style of music. Whatever your style is, music can help you train harder without even realizing it. Prepare your music playlist and update it when you get bored or just want a change. Not only will you enjoy your workout more, but you’ll probably sweat more – which means more calories burned!

4. Your workout type. Some people were born runners; some were born dancers; others were born a completely different type. I’ll run 10K at the gym, and I’ve run quite a bit throughout my life … but I’ve never had that desire to run a marathon. I’m not one of those people who can just run and really enjoy it or get addicted to it.

On the other hand, I can dance for hours on end and enjoy every second of it! We all have activities we love. If you don’t have a workout activity you truly love, then find one you enjoy more than others. The key here is: working out isn’t just for losing that extra weight, but it’s to feel healthy and vibrant throughout your life!

So, if this is something you’ll be doing even when you retire, you want to be able to enjoy it as much as possible. That’s not to say there won’t be days you don’t want to work out … everyone has those days. Still, if you love to dance but don’t dance at all anymore … but lift weights 3 days per week and do cardio in between and really don’t enjoy it very much … why not swap a couple of workouts with some Zumba or dance classes?! Find what you like and use it!

5. Your workout mood. Are you like a drill sergeant with yourself? Or do you lack motivation throughout your workout, just doing the movements but not putting much effort into it? There are many different moods people have when working out. You’ve probably experienced most of them at some time or another. However, only you know which mood you have most of the time when you’re at the gym.

If you are spending a lot of time at the gym but just going through the movements and not getting the results, it’s probably time you think about getting a personal trainer, Pilates trainer, or another type of trainer. You know how much you push yourself at the gym. Be honest with yourself, and be proactive with a positive attitude! Everyone can benefit from private trainers in the field you’re training in. Classes are not created for you individually, but privates are!

Enjoy discovering your workout style. This is about you and your health and wellness! Have fun! 🙂

I have been working out for close to 20 years and I must say I need my music! The workout gear isn’t that big a deal but without my music it is not the same. I love to do compound movements as they use many muscle groups but I don not stay with the same routine for long.

Thanks for your comment, Mike! It’s great to hear you’ve found music works for your workouts. 🙂 Have a great week!

Walking. I have a bad habit of writing the most amazing blog posts in my head while I stride along, only to completely forget my brilliance the second I get to a pencil and paper.

Thanks for you comment, Xan! I agree it can be frustrating if you forget the thoughts you had while driving, walking, etc. It’s great that you enjoy walking, as it’s wonderful for the mind as well as the body. Plus your joints will thank you in years to come. Have a great day!
