Drinking Enough Water
One of the awesome benefits of drinking enough water for you is having increased energy!
The amount of water each person needs varies. A good rule of thumb is find out how much water you need daily to have clear or pale-yellow urine. Some people find drinking half their body weight in water works. I find I typically need more water than some of the ounce recommendations I’ve read. So, find what works for you and talk to your doctor to see what he or she recommend for you.
I’m one of those people who struggles to drink enough water. If I don’t track my water intake, I find I almost always don’t have enough. I really have to focus on drinking plenty of water. When I have a goal and I track my water, it goes from being a struggle to easily having lots of water. I was proud that when I was in labor, the nurse said I was really hydrated. I consciously focused on drinking more water in my pregnancy. Now I’m working to continue drinking lots of water and actually increasing my goal now that I’m breastfeeding. Now that I’m working out again and breastfeeding, I’m trying to have a gallon (123 ounces) of water each day.
10 Ways to Drink More Water
Here are 10 ways to drink more water:
1. Set a goal for your daily water intake. Remember this varies from person to person. So, find what makes you hydrated and set that as your goal. This will also change at different times in your life. For example, pregnancy, breastfeeding, different ages, and length/intensity of workouts can need a different amount of water.
2. Track your daily water intake. Tracking my water intake is what makes all the difference for me.
3. Use a gallon jug and try to finish half or all of it in one day. We keep 2 one gallon jugs in our refrigerator.
4. Use a 20+ ounce water bottle and drink from it 3+ times. I have a 20-ounce glass water bottle and a 30-ounce stainless steel tumbler. These are both great because I just have to drink from my water bottle 6 times or tumbler 4 times to meet my water goal. My husband and I have both of these below.
5. Drink a glass of water before you eat a meal or snack. This can also help you know what’s truly hunger and what is thirst.
6. Keep your water in the refrigerator if you like chilled water. I love chilled water, and it’s lovely for during and after workouts.
7. Add fruit to your water to give it flavor. This can really make water taste great. Sliced strawberries or oranges taste fabulous.
8. Drink non-caffeinated herbal tea made with only water. This makes water more interesting. Plus, you get the other benefits associated with having herbal tea.
9. Drink two glasses of water when you wake up. This can help you feel more alert and energetic, too.
10. Drink from larger glasses at home. We have some glasses that are 21 ounces, and I love that I drink more with them. It makes it easier to track your water intake when you know the size of glass you have. Plus, the larger glasses mean less tracking since you just have to know how many times you refilled and finished drinking from the glass. We have these glasses, and we really like them.
Bonus: If breastfeeding, drink water each time you breastfeed. This has been really helpful in getting enough water and replenishing the water that’s being lost during breastfeeding.
Make Drinking Water More Exciting
Fun water bottles and tumblers can help with making drinking water more enjoyable. I also like using stainless steel straws and glass straws.
